The Struggle of the Student Entrepreneur (And How Yunimall is Changing the Game)
One of the most difficult, understated challenges in higher education is running a business while pursuing a degree.
A student decides to start a side hustle on campus to make extra cash but encounters the following issues:
- The Marketing Issue: Begging friends for the tenth time this week to "please repost" your product or service on WhatsApp or Instagram or you're sending adverts to general student emails and people just find it annoying.
- Manually tracking orders in DMs while sitting through a lecture. Balancing preparing for tests and examinations with physical deliveries across campus.
- Watching their business end the moment you graduate.
We surveyed student business owners across Nigerian universities and discovered that two major bottlenecks dominate their struggle: Marketing and Logistics.
On the other side, regular students struggle just to find basic items. If you need a pair of crocs on campus, you have to ask around word-of-mouth or scroll endlessly through fragmented WhatsApp groups.
This isn't just a local problem, it’s actually global.
Research Validates This Exact Struggle
-Babcock University Study ("Digital Marketplace for Babcock University") : Highlights that reliance on word-of-mouth, WhatsApp, and social media leads to missed appointments, disorganized communication, and a lack of trust and transparency.
- MARA University of Technology Research ("A student marketplace for university community") : Confirms that students worldwide turn to entrepreneurship for living expenses, but fail to scale due to a lack of dedicated platforms, reliance on instant messaging, and low discovery.
In 2021, during an Entrepreneurship course facilitated by the Enterprise Development Centre (EDC) at Pan-Atlantic University, we decided to stop accepting this system. What began as a group project for a grade evolved into Yunimall—co-founded and led by Ayomide Abiola ACA Qualified and Augustine Achike PMP.
Yunimall is built specifically to address campus commerce pain points through tailored features:
- Centralized Marketplace: Connects student buyers and sellers within and across universities.
- Integrated Logistics Support: Streamlines campus deliveries without disrupting study schedules.
- Alumni Feature: Ensures business continuity and brand retention post-graduation.
- Automated Sales Dashboard: Gives founders an instant overview of total sales, orders, and product performance.
- Verified Student KYC: Secure onboarding via matriculation numbers and student IDs.
- Secure Escrow & Payments: Encrypted payment gateways that protect both buyers and sellers from fraud.
We are officially live in Pan-Atlantic University and coming soon to other universities. If you're a student entrepreneur or student in PAU, register here at app.yuni-mall.com
